North Ayrshire Synchro coach Helen Ternent’s getting ready to start 2019 with a shiver by taking a dip in Loch Lomond on New Year’s Day.

Helen is going to be taking part in the Luss Loony Dook to raise funds for Alzheimers Scotland.

She’s no stranger to open water swimming in the summer months, taking part in the Cumbrae – Largs challenge a couple of times and helping a friend train for a triathlon, but this is the first time she’s been wading into the water in winter.

Helen tells us: “The short days make it very tricky to find the time for open water swimming at this time of year so when I read about the Loony Dook I thought it would be great way to get in a swim and do it for a good cause as well.

“I hear so many stories from family and friends about their difficulties with loved ones with Alzhimers so if I can help in just a small way then it’ll be worth it.

“And anyway, there’s a promise of a warm bowl of soup and cake for after we emerge from the Loch so it’s not going to be too much hardship for me!”
